Life at the Zoo...Fair...Wallis House

Last Tuesday, the two oldest classes had a field trip to the Indianapolis Zoo.  I chaperoned last year and vowed to always go on this trip as the zoos a big place and I'd feel a bit better knowing I was there with them - just in case.  This crew was pretty excited to be out and about!

Penguins never get old!

Potty break after viewing the dolphins.

We got to see the newest addition to the zoo, this little one just turned a month old.  By the time we reached the desert, the kids were all whiny, hot and tired so the teachers called it an hour early so they could sit down and eat.  It wasn't the most well-planned field trip but the kids had fun all the same.

When we got home, the kiddos had a package waiting for them.  I finally cashed in 6,000 Gifts to Grow points from Pampers and ordered a Plasma Car.  Phoebe had a blast on one in a boutique toy store (where they were selling them for $72) so when I saw them on the rewards page, I knew it was time to redeem some points (I also found them for $45 on Amazon in case we need to buy a second one some day...)  Either way, it's crazy what four years of diapers will get you...

Maverick broke it in (yep, he's naked).

Saturday we planned to head back to the State Fair at some point.  On our way, Ryan couldn't resist the "Garage Sale for over 600 homes" sign and we made our way inside a church gymnasium.  It was pretty well picked over by the time we arrived, but we got 11 books, some instruments and Phoebe's new favorite stuffed animal, a webkinz horse she's named, "Pony" all for $10. They were having the sale as a fundraiser for the 8th graders who were going to take their class trip to Washington, D.C. - trying to help offset the $950 price tag per child...  The church had a large playground so we let the kids burn enough energy to warrant a nap before heading to the Fair.

Once everyone was awake, we headed back to the fairgrounds to see things we hadn't done last time we visited.  Learning about healthy breakfast options (which go beyond cereal bars and low-fat pop tarts).

Mama Pig.

And while Ryan and Maverick looked at vehicles in the Ford lot, Phoebe was enamored with the Circle City Cloggers.

Little Hands on the Farm (again).

Maverick had a hard time grasping the "just one" rule.

Phoebe got to meet the Fair Queen (who survived a stagecoach accident the very next day).

Showing our support at the Fair.

And nothing says "State Fair" like a rat tail and a Carhartt shirt...

Maverick's earlier nap apparently was not long enough.

And our biggest regret - they were selling this exact playhouse at the garage sale we were at for $25!  I like to think that had we gone in to buy it as soon as we saw it, we would have told it had already been sold.  By the time we actually left the sale, it had indeed been sold.
Either way, Maverick had a blast playing in this one at the Fair.

Sunday, after church, the most unrelaxing brunch and a short nap, we headed to a park.  The last time we were at this park, I was walking stairs and paths trying to jump start labor with Maverick so it was weird to go back and relax while they played in the sand...Two little girls had started to make a "river" and Phoebe and Maverick quickly joined in.

Doing my motherly part.

Maverick exploring the rest of the park while drying off.

Ryan explaining to Phoebe that the two girls she'd been playing with were disobedient to their mother and that she could no longer play with them.  Luckily, three other children showed up at about that time so she played awhile longer.

Our $4 steal from the sale on Saturday.

Not much hard surface to roll around on but one day soon they'll have an entire unfinished basement that will be perfect for things like this!

And on to our exciting news.  That excavator in the distance is digging up our lot!  Our neighbors next door have the siding in the color we'd originally picked out but were told we could no longer have since they'd selected it first.  After some fierce negotiating by my sexy, persuasive husband, they offered us cement hardi plank siding (at no additional cost) in the color Ryan had picked from another builder.  And although it was originally a huge inconvenience, we're pretty thrilled with the outcome.

Of course after they dug, it rained long and hard.

Conveniently, Indiana soil is pretty parched so the standing water didn't last long.

And today they poured the cement footers so depending on the weather, we'll soon have basement walls!  After that comes the framing of the house and then it should be around 80 "working" days before the house is ours!  Lots to do and think about in the next few months but we're SO excited about what's in store!
